Randy Hansen is a retired middle school science teacher from Des Moines, Iowa. He puts his biology degree to use by creating detailed wildlife carvings. Randy carves primarily birds, but has also created fish and mammals over his carving career. He regularly donates his work to a variety of conservation organizations. These have included the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, Ducks Unlimited, The National Wild Turkey Federation, Pheasants Forever and the Blank Park Zoo. In October of 2016 one of his carvings will be auctioned off to raise funds for the Navy Seal Family Foundation in San Diego, California. Randy has entered major carving contests from Maryland (Ward Foundation) to San Diego (California Open) and from Louisiana to Canada, Randy’s work has always placed in the top three. Hansen’s carvings have also been named best of show five times at the Iowa State Fair. His carving of a belted kingfisher placed third best of show at the International woodcarver’s congress in 2014. Randy is currently ranked in the top two for national decorative carver of the year. He has been named carver of the year twice for the local Ducks Unlimited organization, and has displayed his work at the Aldo Leopold art exhibit at Iowa State University. Randy’s carvings can be found in private collections throughout the Midwest and from Massachusetts to Georgia and from Alaska and south to California.
“I am looking forward to helping carvers in the Winterset area create carvings that they can treasure or possibly share with friends or family.”
